About The American Índio Gigante Breeders Association

Our Association is Dedicated to Índio Gigante

The American Índio Gigante Breeders Association (AÍGBA) is a U.S. based organization dedicated to the preservation, education, and responsible advancement of the Índio Gigante chicken breed.

Founded by breeders and enthusiasts committed to accuracy and long-term breed recognition, AÍGBA exists to provide structure where enthusiasm alone is not enough. Our focus is on breed integrity, documentation, and alignment with established poultry standards, rather than trends or unverified claims.

Why AÍGBA Was Formed

As interest in Índio Gigante has grown in the United States, so has confusion surrounding the breed - its origins, characteristics, and proper representation. Height alone has often been mistaken for breed quality, while critical elements such as structure, type, temperament, and consistency have been overlooked. AÍGBA was formed to address these issues by creating a centralized, educational, and standards-driven association that supports breeders who wish to advance the breed responsibly.

Our Philosophy

• Índio Gigante is a defined breed, not a generic category for tall chickens

• Ethical breeding prioritizes health, structure, and type, not shortcuts

• Education and transparency strengthen the breed and its community

• Formal recognition requires organization, patience, and participation

• Preservation is a long-term commitment, not a marketing strategy

AÍGBA operates on several core principles:

We value thoughtful discussion, documented information, and collaboration over hype or speculation.

Relationship to the American Poultry Association

AÍGBA supports the process of pursuing formal recognition of Índio Gigante through the American Poultry Association (APA).
This includes:

• Encouraging APA membership among AÍGBA members

• Developing a clear and consistent U.S. breed standard

• Exhibiting birds at APA-sanctioned shows

• Educating judges and exhibitors on breed characteristics

Our goal is not rapid recognition, but correct recognition.

AÍGBA serves:

• Dedicated breeders working toward consistency and improvement

• Hobbyists seeking accurate information about the breed

• Exhibitors preparing birds for sanctioned shows

• Poultry organizations and judges seeking educational resources

Whether you maintain a large breeding program or a small, carefully selected flock, AÍGBA provides guidance grounded in standards and respect for the breed’s origins.

Looking Forward

The future of Índio Gigante in the United States depends on clarity, cooperation, and commitment. AÍGBA exists to help ensure that future generations of breeders inherit a breed that is recognizable, respected, and responsibly maintained.

We believe Índio Gigante belongs in the exhibition hall - not just online -and we are committed to doing the work required to make that future possible.

AÍGBA is an independent breeders association and is not affiliated with any foreign registry or commercial operation.
